Profile
Yasmeen is an experienced barrister with a specialist focus on Family Law, particularly in matters relating to children. Since being called to the Bar in 2008, she has built a strong reputation for her in-depth knowledge, commitment to client welfare, and her ability to handle complex and sensitive cases. Yasmeen’s practice is diverse, encompassing a wide range of family law matters, and she is known for her compassionate and practical approach in representing vulnerable individuals.
Court of Appeal Experience
Yasmeen has extensive experience as Junior Counsel being led by Leading or Junior Counsel. Yasmeen has appeared in the Court of Appeal representing a client in a significant family law matter that involved the death of a parent. The appeal was granted, and the original findings were overturned. The case was remitted for retrial, establishing important principles that highlight the interplay between family law and criminal law.
Public Law Care Proceedings
Yasmeen is particularly skilled in Public Law Care proceedings, where she represents vulnerable individuals who have experienced domestic abuse, sexual abuse (of both parents and children), neglect, non-accidental injury, death, financial hardship, addiction, mental health and learning difficulties. Her work often involves cases where capacity to litigate is a concern, and she collaborates closely with mental health advocates to ensure her clients’ rights are protected or obtains instructions from the Official Solicitor. Yasmeen is experienced in representing parents, children, Guardians, extended family members and intervenors. She has dealt with cases involving forced marriage, honour-based violence, and the need for Special Advocates when sensitive information is involved.
A significant area of Yasmeen’s practice involves representing parents at fact-finding hearings, particularly in cases where allegations of causing non-accidental injury to children have been made.
Yasmeen has experience in dealing with complex evidence including autopsies, x-rays, burns expert reports, video and photographic evidence and voluminous internet (including dark web references) and meta data. Notably, she was junior counsel in a case where footprint analysis was used to identify a child victim of sexual abuse.
Private Law Proceedings
Yasmeen has also represented clients in Private Law proceedings, handling applications for child arrangements orders, prohibited steps order, specific issue orders, leave to remove children from the jurisdiction, internal relocation cases, and issues involving parties who are not habitually resident in the UK. She is often involved in fact-finding hearings involving numerous allegations of all types of abuse.
Injunctive Proceedings
Yasmeen has significant experience in representing vulnerable people in injunctive proceedings under the Family Law Act, providing representation from without notice hearings to final hearing. Her approach ensures that clients in urgent need of protection receive the legal safeguards they require, particularly in matters involving non-molestation orders and occupation orders. Yasmeen also regularly defends applications.
Commitment to Client Welfare
Yasmeen’s practice is deeply committed to advancing the welfare of children and advocating for vulnerable individuals. Yasmeen understands the immense emotional and practical challenges that come with family law matters. She strives to offer a compassionate yet assertive approach to her clients. Her comprehensive experience, strong advocacy skills, and empathetic approach make her a trusted barrister for clients facing some of life’s most challenging circumstances.
