In a very harrowing case of Murder, Nigel Edwards KC, leading Mohammed Abdi of Hassans solicitors, Birmingham, saw his client acquitted by reason of diminished responsibility.

The jury had heard evidence of how the deceased had suffered upwards of 112 injuries from hammer blows in a prolonged and sustained attack in his own home late at night.

The house was said to be like a bloodbath with the attack taking place in several rooms upstairs and down. The deceased had died at the scene due to the gravity and number of injuries.

Prior to trial the defendant pleaded guilty to manslaughter, he accepting that all the injuries leading to death had been caused by him.

The Crown insisted, for all the obvious reasons, that the defendant must stand trial for murder.

Expert evidence was called by the Crown in the form of a forensic pathologist, a psychiatrist, a forensic blood analyst and a video analyst. The defence called their own psychiatrist and pathologist.

In a case involving highly complex issues of science and fact the jury deliberated and returned their verdicts on the third day after retirement. The defendant will be sentenced in 2024.
